One of the challenges to renovating an old Bermuda home is that the original water tanks were much smaller than what we have today, leading to significant issues for the families residing in such homes. For example, one particular home often ran out of water due to the family occupying the home during its renovations, creating a constant tug-of-war between construction demands and household needs. This would be four regular occupants in addition to another five or so contractors, all of whom required water for daily activities and ongoing work. Running the water level low would cause sediment to be drawn into the pump and sent downstream, which could pose a risk to the integrity of the plumbing system. Luckily, they already had a 5 micron filter upstream of a Viqua D4 UV system as counter measures, significantly improving water quality and protecting the home’s plumbing. In addition, they installed a tank level monitoring system to keep track of when it would be time to call the water truck, ensuring a more reliable water supply during this busy renovation period, ultimately allowing both the family and contractors to work more efficiently without the fear of sudden water shortages disrupting their tasks.
Once the renovations were complete and the tank was cleaned, the choice was made to have the home connected to Bermuda Water Works. Now with the water supply problem solved, the new challenge was that the incoming water was chlorinated, leading to an unpleasant taste and smell that the occupants found intolerable. To combat this issue effectively, we decided to swap out the existing 5-micron sediment filter for a higher-quality 5-micron carbon filter, which is renowned for its ability to absorb impurities and enhance the overall drinking experience. This simple change not only improved the taste of the water significantly but also provided the added benefit of UV sterilization that covers the entire home, ensuring that every drop of water that flows from the taps is pure and safe for consumption.
