2025 Hurricane Season

Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30, but low-pressure systems, tropical storms, and hurricanes can occur at any time. While we enjoy the “tank rain,” strong winds can introduce biological and chemical contaminants in to your stored water. Below are three methods to keep your drinking water safe during the stormy weather.

Manual Protection

High winds can lift saltwater, vegetation, and other contaminants onto the roof, so block off gutters to prevent contaminated water from entering the tank during storms. This is the cheapest method, but it’s obviously labor-intensive and very inefficient. Nobody wants to be up and down a ladder every time AccuWeather makes an update, so let’s go over a few other options.

Point of Entry Protection

Utilize a point of entry water treatment system so water is treated as it leaves your tank but before supplying the whole building. These tend to be the largest in footprint and most expensive of the three general options listed, but once installed the monitoring and maintenance is very easy. Depending on the system plus the quality of the water source, maintenance can be quarterly, semi-annually or annually. They are best suited for biological defence but can be modified to handle some chemical loads. They tend to be installed in pump rooms or maintenance areas if you have the space.

Point of Use Protection

Employ a point-of-use water treatment system. Out of the three options listed, these are middle-of-the-road in terms of price, maintenance, and labor. They’re geared for removing chemical contaminants but can handle biological ones too if the load is not high. These tend to be under the counter or very close to the faucet or point of use – hence the name. The maintenance and monitoring can be monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually depending on the system being served.
